View Full Version : MMORPG Alignment Discussion

BigJonno wrote up an article trying to describe his thoughts on how players break down into different alignments (http://www.mythicahq.com/features/bigjonno/2003/12/alignments.shtml).How does this relate to modern day MMORPGs? Researchers at the BigJonno University of Role Playing Sciences (BURPS) have discovered new principles and the alignments derived from them. These principles are hardcore, casual, powergame, roleplay and WTF? All MMORPG players fit into one of the following nine alignments.
I take exception to any statement that includes the words "all players", but its a fun read.
We decided to run a poll on it and want your input. What alignment are you?
Of the alignments I think I fit closest to Hardcore WTF. Exploring to me is as much fun as mashing and a bashing. Although it goes with mood, sometimes I just want to get in and bash away. High levels are more to allow me to expand what I can do. Although looking good while doing it is always a plus.

I'm definitely Hardcore Roleplay. I tend to outlevel most of my friends, but keep it in-character and have an unbridled hatred of doods. The best times in-game are those when nobody in the group gives half a damn about getting loot or experience...we're so caught up in the stories we've created that the numbers just vanish. At the end of the session, we're all kinda shocked to see just how far we've advanced our characters numerically.

Hardcore Roleplayer / WTF Powergamer
There's nothing like breaking up "d00ds" into mass confusion when you start going off in-character around them. Bring the RP with you I say... it can be contagious ;)

Hafta gree with Kenshin here. If you bring the RP with you wherever you go and keep playing in-character, it can get contagious among people who are at least a little-open-minded and fun-loving. If someone who's a little timid about roleplay sees someone else doing it, they get a little less timid. Sometimes, it brings out the best in people...but among some of the real jerkoffs, it brings out the worst, sadly. Intolerance and flat-out ridicule are the rules among dyed-in-the-wool doods sometimes. It's sad and sickening, but it's life, like anything else.

yuppy yup, i generally don't go out of my way to roleplay (although i do play my characters with their own individual quirks) but if someone else is doing it i will definately play along :)

I am such a Total WTF it is not even funny. Just look at me when I buy a new game.. I START with making a maximum of characters, of different races and classes. Then I play them all at the same time.. changing back and forth and spending more time loading new games than actually playing them... It is odd but I find it so much fun. B-)
