Anyone playing any good ones at the moment? I need something to fill the void while I'm waiting for my next MMORPG.

One that I enjoyed back in the day which Ibelieve is still running strong is Arctic (http://mud.arctic.org/). It is a heavily modified DIKU set in Dragonlance. It has lot of hidden stats, item decay (along with limited copies of some items in the world), spell memorization ala D&D instead of mana, high level spells need to be found off mobs, alignment matters in the creatures you kill, etc.

I personally played 3 kingdoms for over 1/3 of my life. :) Its a wonderful mud that I greatly enjoy. 3k.org port 5000.
If you want a really good mud, check out Aardwolf (http://www.aardwolfmud.org/)
Its a very good mud, with around 300 members online at any given time. Its been running since 1996/7 and has a stable fanbase and IMM's that are really dedicated to the game.
If your getting into a mud, you owe it to yourself to check it out (I believe its the best one available). It has a great guild system and a pretty damn good quest system. PM me if you need any advice on character creation.
Otherwise. Ive started playing Anarchy Online (http://www.anarchy-online.com/). To be honest I didnt think it was going to be all that good, but Im finding myself enjoying every second of it. Yeah the controls are a little clunky, but it has a fun quest system and its alot different than the usual.
Plus it had a 7 day trial, expansion pack included. So I fig.. what the hell?? Im keeping it now. Fun game

AO is a flipping party. Seriously one of the best MMOs out there right now, especially in terms of originality. Had it been like htis at launch then it would have ruled the MMO genre. Me? I have spent too much time in there, and drained every little bit of fun I can out of ALL the classes. So I am moving on... But whenever I feel like I need a new game.. AO is normally what I start up again.

I played AO a great deal but it continued to frustrate me more then you can imagine.
I made an MA and am playing around with a keeper a bit. Im finding the MA to be really cool starting out. I do impressive amounts of damage (comparitively speaking- Im low level) and I can heal myself to a high degree. My down time is next to nothing.
I had a friend who talked me into it. Gave me a load of cash (more than any newb deserves, but he tells me the money rolls in with his high level character). It seems like a twinks game - and that aint bad- but I guess maybe I have a little too much cash at a time where I probably should be struggling to earn a little keepsake.
Anyways - Ive had loads of fun playing around with implants, and nano's. Plus I dig the quest system. True enough, it probably will get a bit redundant - but I have to admit - Its loads better than SWG and I think better than EQ's questing system.
Either way its refreshing to play something different... but I do believe Harafnir is right, Had they not had so many problems at launch it probably would have taken off alot more than it did.
Its got its merits, and Im having fun.

I beta'd the last expansion (the beauty of a Fileplanet subscription.) When you started you got a shed load of money and a ring that made you gain XP at ridiculous rates. That was very cool.

I never been able to really get into AO myself dispite playing it for about 6 months... I think if I had a nice group of people to play with I might, but eh. Can't solo well with my soldier compared to other classes so that annoyed me, and had alot of trouble finding groups after a while. Im currently playing Planetside and A tale in the desert. I enjoy both because they are like polar opposites of each other so I can kinda balance myself out. :)

I enjoyed Planetside. Best damn Galaxy pilot in the NC!
It was hard to keep playing planetside. Especially if you started the game from day one- Way too many people left the game for various reasons. I dont care why they left, I just wanted someone to shoot! and the battles to keep the same high level scale they used to. Anyways the outfit I ran for a bit went from, at its height, 2 full squads (more active.. but two squads was our usual at any one time) down to about 3 people.
Before they turned off the dots, emerald was only getting up to 3 blue and man oh man I missed the days of the gold dots. Where pop locks were a constant and a battle was never too far away.
So as the people dwindled so did my desire to play. A shame, really, because planetside was an awesome idea and alot of fun.

The problem with PS is that it has no longevity whatsoever. Once you've assaulted one base you've assaulted them all. I still think that if it had whole cities and more RPG elements (which it was supposed to have,) then I'd still be playing it.

Silly NC us in Vanu ripped both TR and NC up tonight. Me and a friend along with a person we just met in Reaver and us in a magrider took at least 3 bases in the small time I played. It was great fun, we killed TR Maxs and Reavers left and right. I was really funny when all through of us fired on a sniper at the same time too. Two tank cannons and a few Reaver missiles make for one dead sniper. :)
I just got back into the game with the new 30 day free trial. Thats kinda of a sign of how bad its doing really, but I think they have made masss improvements from when they started. I liked the game alot in beta, then kinda got disabused with it when it started to lag on players but now everything is running smooth and im having alot of fun with it again.
I didnt play it in beta- but I had it on launch day. I was one of the lucky few that didnt have any real lag issues.
I tried playing in the smaller fights. Hell a friend of mine and I would take a magrider against just about anything. We had a great time. But those small fights got tiring. I wanted real action- leading squads sucked when there just wasnt any real fight to go to.
I was working on my last bit of CR 5, just got tired of searching for a fight.. finding a small one, then 5 minutes later it was over.

Yea..The game does need more players and more bottlenecks. I remember one in beta of us holding a bridge against at least 30-40 other people. It went on for a couple hours too.

I played PS in the beta. I had rediculous lag issues(which was partly because of my RAM) but it was really fun. In beta you could find huge 30min battles left and right. If you took over a base, within 1hr you back trying to defend it or retake it, it was really fun. I always thought the NC were overpowered though, especially the maxes, once your clamped down you could kill even the most heavliy armoured enemy within 5secs.

It's the TR's that clamp down. The NC MAXes have energy shields. I like TR MAXes, you can just run behind them and blow them into tiny pieces.
I played vanu. I loved the max's.. the quasar even when it had only 40 rounds, hell the pre buff starfire was cool too. I was cheesy as all hell.. but I found a place on the roof of a tech plant I could sit and slaughter reavers. All good fun.
And yeah at release it was one helluva game. Instant action worked... or you could choose a continent.. there was a battle almost everywhere.
Damn shame what it is now- just not enough players. I really wish they would have done a server consolidation way back when these issues were arising. But little by little it bled.
Im sure you can find good battles every once in awhile, its just not nearly the constant action and challenge it used to be

BigJ,
Heh. yeah but some got smart and put their back up against the wall.

Smart TRs? Surely you jest.
Oh yes! There were a few smart TR.. unfortunately they all left after the pounder nerf (over to the NC.. jackhammer agile uberness)
On a side note I played alot with my NC characters on werner. Gotta love the vanguard.

oh yah, lol. Its been a while, I only played the beta. :)
I thought it was funny, I chose Vanu on emerald.. when I probably shoud have had my vanu on werner. And I choose NC on werner when I probably should have had em on emerald. Heh.
Shrug I had fun nonetheless. And it was great kickin someones arse and getting a tell about it. Man!! Leave me be!!! I just wanna kill some vanu :p
