View Full Version : How about changing the rank names?

How about changing the rank names (for number of posts) from their current (very un-Viking like) forms to something more in line with Mythica themes?

I don't know what the best ranking system would be. For example, the Rune forums use:

0-14 Warrior wannabe
15-29 warrior-in-training
30-99 viking warrior
100-299 berserker
300+ valhalla's chosen
Forum administrators are typically known as gods or demi-gods.

In my opinion, that isn't enough ranks, but you get the idea. Since in Mythica you are immortal, it should be something fitting...is there any way we can find out some of the Mythica nomenclature to base something like this on?

We could borrow some surnames from that viking name test...

Hmmm...not sure about post count ranges, but here are some possible ranks (These come from TSR's Viking Campaign Sourcebook and misc Internet sites). The meaning is in parentheses:

Thrall (slave)
Thjòn (proven slave)
Friman (freeman)
Karl (fighting retainer to Bondi)
Bondir (proven warriors)
Hersir (landed men)
Jarl (local kings)
Konge (true kings)

Here's my 2 cents.

rank 1 - Valkyrie hitchhiker
rank 2 - Einherjar
rank 3 - Odin's minion
rank 4 - Odin's servant
rank 5 - Odin's counsel
rank 6 - Odin's champion
rank 7 - God of Posts

... or something like that, but I like Angantyr's suggestions too.

Cheers,
X

Can't have Karl cause it reminds me too much of Ken Karl the destroyer of AC2.

An alternative to Karl would be Huskarl. Karls and Huskarls were roughly at the same level in Viking society. Karls were warriors, while Huskarls ("House" Karls) dealt more with administering household business.

Here are some more alternative (but similar) ranks:

King - ruled a realm divided into fylkir.
Hirdmen - king's bodyguards. Also military leaders in wartime.
Chieftain - leader of a fylkir.
Jarl - local tax collector.
Hersir - agent for the Jarl.
Bondi - property owners.
Freed Men - former thralls freed by their owner. Had some legal and political rights.
Thralls - slaves, mainly debtors and foreign captives.

Hmmm...did some more searching while composing this post. Here's a website that has a fair number of ranks. Each rank is given a short description and history.

Any suggestions for rank names, we've got a list compiled, but a few more would be nice.

I kind of liked these ones that you posted earlier:

Thrall (slave)
Thjòn (proven slave)
Friman (freeman)
Karl (fighting retainer to Bondi)
Bondir (proven warriors)
Hersir (landed men)
Jarl (local kings)
Konge (true kings)

Here are some suggested post count ranges:

0-49
50-299
300-999
1000-1999
2000-2999
3000-3999
4000-4999
5000+

The post ranges may seem high to some of you, but remember that as time goes on, it will not be uncommon for some members to be in the thousands of posts range.

Personally, I'd prefer fewer ranks with more differentiation at the low end, and a lower cap for the highest rank.

say...

0-24
25-99
100-249
250-499
500-999
1000+

The ranks represent the participation of a person in the community IMO, such that newcomers can identify those who have been around a long time and weigh their opinions accordingly. Once you hit the huge numbers a person with 1000 posts is not much different from someone with 2000+ etc...thoguhts?

DX_Mage

1000 is attainable but 5000 would take lots of pharm posting.

Angantyr

Consider a moderately active member who posts and average of 2.5 posts per day. In three years, they will have over 2700 posts.

Wouldn't it be nice not to have to re-vamp the rank scale when that happens?

However, i do see the point about more ranks early on. How about some sort of escalating scale? (I plugged the numbers into Excel and it makes a nice upward curve.):

0..49
50..99
100..199
200..399
400..799
800..1599
1600..3199
3200..4999
5000+

That way you keep most of the ranks in the under 1600 range, but still allow a few ranks for the really active members. :)

Jotun
08-28-2003, 01:48 PM
The vast majority of people don't stay with a community anywhere nearly that long. Anyone who has 1000 or 1500 posts is plenty worthy of the highest honor you can bestow, IMO. But hey, I can be reasoned with :p

Angantyr
08-28-2003, 02:23 PM
Hmm...Ok...how about this...I chopped the scale in half and lopped off the last rank:

0..24
25..49
50..99
100..199
200..399
400..799
800..1599
1600+

Still escalating scale, but brought back down into the range of attainable. :)

Jotun
08-28-2003, 02:25 PM
I'd consolidate the 25-99 group, bringing the total down to 7.

Angantyr
08-28-2003, 02:43 PM
I could live with that. What are the rank names that you decided on?

EDIT: Sorry...JonnyG was the one with the name ideas. I got you and JonnyG mixed up. (Your names both start with "Jo" and you are both moderators. :( )

Here's the scale. Yes, there are people that stay with a community long enough, without having to farm posts, that can attain extremely high postcounts :)

0-49
50-499
500-999
1000-1999
2000-3999
4000-5999
6000-9999
10000+

The titles implemented are based on JonnyG's suggestions.

Thank Scout for putting them in, and Angantyr for the list.

Yay!! I'm a Thjòn. I may be a slave, but at least I'm proven!!! ;)

EDIT: I updated the description in the parethesis for Karl, Bondir, Hersir, Jarl, and Konge to reflect singularity rather than plurality. It's up to you, JonnyG (or whoever is in charge), if you want to change the names to match:

Thrall (slave)
Thjòn (proven slave)
Friman (freeman)
Karl (fighting retainer to a Bondir) <---Bondir is singular, Bondi is plural
Bondir (proven warrior)
Hersir (landed man)
Jarl (local king)
Konge (true king)
