i started with a MUD back in 1992 and then went on to UO, then EQ, tried out AC for a bit, then DAoC, then back to EQ, took a year-ish off, then back to EQ, then SWG for 1 day (plus beta), horizons beta, then back to UO :)

Ah, found a history of online games. I knew my dates were off, The Sierra Network was started in 1992.
History (http://www.gatecentral.com/shared_docs/Timeline2.html).
And, I loved the Imagination Network. Met a lot of great people there, good times for all.

I have you all beat :P I started MMO's about 2000 with neocron and later AC2 :P
I played computer games well before that though, like Wolf3d and Commander Keen(Note: I've forgotten almost everything about FPS games except for RTCW which is what I'm playing while waiting for Mythica). Recently MMO's have grasped my attention much more than any other genre, I may be new but I'm kinda sorta experienced :)

Hmpf. Well call me an old coot. I started with some text-based stuff on an old local chat line way back when...around 1984 or so. I guess the first actual game that might be recognized would be the original Neverwinter Nights in the ancient days of AO-Hell. Back when 56k was "new technology" and I ran a 286 (I think)...it's been so long and us old farts have foggy memories...damn senility...**shakes his cane at the assembled whippersnappers**

I played a MUD called Arctic back in 1993. Didn't do any 'real MMORPGs' until I got into the beta for Asheron's Call in summer 1999.

You young whipper-snappers and yer computers! In my day, computers were called BOOKS!
I first played Dungeons & Dragons in 1979 and kept going with D&D well into my early twenties. My first computer RPG was "Kings Quest" on an IBM PC Jr. in 1981 or 1982 - the same year Microsoft released their first Flight Simulator. I played "The Leather Goddesses of Phoebos" in 1984 on an IBM XT. I experienced Bards Tale on the Commodore 64 in 1985 or 1986, I then played Mech Warrior, MUD style, via an Apple II-GS BBS in 1990, so that would be my first multiplayer RPG. My first graphical MMORPG was Asheron's Call which I started in the fall of 1998 and played for a year; I then moved to EverQuest and played from 1999 to 2003. I've also played DAOC, SWG, ATITD, and Darkspace.
That's my history :)

No it was a text game. Some kind of space trade/battle game I can't remember the name of it at all. Even if you said the name I wouldn't remember it. I want to say trade wars but I don't think that was on bit net....things are kinda fuzzy around then.... lots of drinking ....some mmmmm herbal experimentation....babes...aaahhhhh the good old days....
As for stand alone games that was pong. I can't remember exactly what year that was but it was uber cool cause Grandpa got it for use kids to play 8) he was cool and we kicked his butt in it but I think he let us win.

Well now, if ya wanna get into old school RPGs...I started playing D&D in 3rd or 4th grade...gods, that was a LONG time ago...1979-80. Wow, I feel old. As for single-player computer RPGs, I played all the old classics - King's Quest, Ultima (yep, Ultima I and Akalabeth too), Wizardry, Wasteland...the list goes on and on.
