View Full Version : RivalWatch: World of Warcraft - GenCon Report
WorldofWar did a GenCon report on World of Warcraft, see the compiled info here (http://www.worldofwar.net/articles/gencon2003.php)
I didnt get a chance to read it all, but I skimmed and found this cool little tidbit.
You can trade for services
"Say, John the Warrior wants poison effect for his sword. Dave the Rogue wants boots and ten gold. You open the trade menu between them and John puts in the boots, gold AND sword...the Rogue can automatically upgrade the weapon once the trade accept button is hit. And the warrior will automatically get back his new upgraded sword and the Rogue will get his boots and gold."
Very cool indeed.

I hope WoW and Mythica don't get released at the same time, because I'd like to try out both games. Also, EQ2, maybe even Sims 2 (ooooooopps!):$
I dont care. I know Ill be playing Mythica. I dig the world alot more than I dig warcrafts.

ok the automuzzle is annoying me now!
*ignores bograt, he isnt the only one his automuzzle is annoying*
heh :P
Ahem. Another cool tidbit -
Not all classes have mana. Warriors have "Rage", Hunters have "Focus", Rogues have "Energy". Each of these can be used up for special attacks. Rage is gained by getting hit, or hitting. It vanishes slowly if your not doing anything. Focus is getting by sitting still, if you move - you lose focus. I'm not sure how you gain Energy, I think it works like mana.
Pretty cool and different from the norm.

it does look cool, i am deffinately gonna give WoW a go
yeah Ill probably give it a shot too. Im planning on sticking around for the free month just to see how things are.
I think, but dont quote me, is that WoW will release before Mythica. So its just going to be something to pass the time until my huntress comes into play.
Shrug, they have some cool ideas and I think the game will be fun and well thought out. But there are a few directions theve gone that I dont think I will like-
1. It seems too newbified
2. They still have timesinks, farming will be a part of WoW
3. Character development, again although well thought out, seems
too basic. There just inst enough options for a unique character
4. The world - however good the story may be, never really inspired me
I think blizzard is trying to draw alot of their battlenet crowd into the game. People that possibly havent had as much exposure to MMO's as we have. So theyve simplified it..... and thats not bad. Dont get me wrong, it will still be fun. The quests will be cool and the game will probably be easy to navigate. It will have alot going for it. Its just not for me.
Conversely- Mythica..... When Chris Lye said (http://www.mythicahq.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1312&perpage=20&pagenumber=2) -

He may as well have been staring me straight in the face when he posted it. Thats exactly what I want, and have been waiting for.
Mythica is what Ill be playing

It's Blizzard...it'll be good, but it'll be late.

blizzard games are never late, blizzard are just clever enough not to announce a release date :)
heh. well lets just say they never meet their "implied" release date.
I still think its going to be out before Mythica though. If not City of Heroes will be. It just started its closed beta. Or Ill just stick with AO. One way or another Ill have a game to sit with until Myth comes out.

CoH is an entirely different genre and has (from what I've heard) already alienated a ton of people due to changing feature sets. Not sure it qualifies as direct competition. There are some major fantasy games (in addition to WoW) coming though..Middle Earth, D&D, Warhammer. EQ2

i dont think i'll bother with WOW but i'll have to try EQ2!
D&D online might be interesting too, i always thought the rules system was designed to be handled by a computer because it's over-complicated and clunky.

I take it you haven't played 3rd ed. It's one of the simplest RPGs around.

Honestly, This sounds so .. um *coughlorwyncough* of me but anyways.. If I try any other MMORPG out there.. like maybe EQ2 or whatever.. Itll have to be one that matches the style shown by AO.
Actually, not to hijack a thread again ..
**crowd moans**
But WTF is the deal with that anyways? This is just my personal opinion, but I seem to be getting alot of head-nods when I mention it. How frikkin OLD is AO anyways? Like, FOREVER? And since that time, what game has produced a level of fashion, accessories, and options? Imean I look at all the MMO's that have come after it, and its PaThetic! AO had, what? 4-5 diff types of black/gray/silver sunglasses ALONE?! Not to mention height/weight/hair color/tattoos to HELL and back.. A whole WARDROBE and 1/2 .. and.. dude.. some of that crap I WANTED in REAL LIFE. The schwankie meter frikkin PEGGED on that game. And what? NOTHING since. WTF is up wioth that khacki smack?> B-)

OH. MY. GOD.
i cannot believe you just said that. yes i've played 3rd ed.
D&D, in ANY edition (except perhaps the original), is the most overly complicated, number crunching, anti-storytelling RPG i've EVER played regardless of how good the players or GM is or how much they like D&D.
now HeroQuest (formerly Hero Wars), is one of the most free flowing RPGS in existance. you should check it out.

I find the D20 rulesystem incredibly simple. All the numbers you ever need are on your character sheet. The mechinic is so simple. Roll a D20, add the appropriate number from your character sheet and if it's equal to or higher than the number you need, bang, you've succeeded. One of my groups flat-out refuses to play anything that isn't D20 or White Wolf and the other one flat-out refuses to play D20 because they think it's too simple.
