View Full Version : WoW alpha leaked

Currently WoW is in alpha being played by Blizz employees and their famalies and apparently the client files were leaked and can be downloaded on irc (1.8 gig compressed). This is far diffrent than the HL2 leak. HL2 source was stolen, not client files. Plus, the files are useless without a login and pass. I suppose that it would be cool to see some textures, molels, and sounds that they plan to use, assuming you could unpack them.

Not saying you are wrong, but I highly doubt they are legit. And like you said you prolly cant unpack them, the file names are probably only recognizable by the main client, and well without a login or pass you are "up a creek." I can't imagine how someone would get ahold of the files...unless a family member or someone got paid a bunch to do it.
My thoughts are, its a rumor, its prolly a virus or lots of junk with a pretty front page that assumes the alpha WoW status. I remember on the forums they had a link to a DL manager that could get the client, and everyone thought it was real, but finally someone downloaded it and found it a hoax.

Greeks: It's the WoW Alpha client. Open the gate and we'll give you a copy.
Trojans: OMG! OPEN TEH GAET!

Dont get me started on trojans...I think i get one at least once a week..and I run firewall, but I bring it down when I game, so its down a lot.

It would be interesting if there was an offline tutorial, I suppose. That or people looking to start making hax for it. *sigh*

I could post the addy of the site that supposedly is spreading it, but Blizzard may not like that very much. Blizzard has told all of the fansites to delete all posts concerning the leak. I got the info from my friend that is a content writer for Stratics. While I don't know if the file is full of trojans it is apparently a legit 3 week old alpha build, but I'd have to see to belive. There is also a movie of the login screen that the group has released as that is about all they can show. The video is what bothers me as it is only 3mb and would be a much more efficient way to spread trojans.

We'd rather you not post any addresses for illegal software, we'd just need to remove the post anyway.

Boy, this certainly doesn't help Blizzard's image much...their games are already known as hack paradises...yikes.

I figured as much Jonny. That's why I didn't post the link.

That's a baseless comment. Many MMORPGs have had leaked betas, it's just a fact of life, really. WoW will be on a completely different structure compared to their other products which will prevent "Hacking," but exploits are inevitable.

He is right though, D2 is probally the biggest hacked game ever.

Hmm, why would you that? Can't you configure your firewall to work with your games?

And it's offered over a free service who's architecture is completely different from that of an MMORPG. *Everything* on WoW will be server-side, just like every other MMORPG, unlike Diablo and such where it's client side, so once again, the point is moot.

I'll believe that WoW is unhackable and that Blizzard cracks down HARD on hackers when I see it. As far as I'm concerned, the big crackdown on battle.net was a publicity stunt. Blizzard has got a LONG way to go to prove that they are taking a real stand against hacking their games.

It is a completely diffrent situation. On B.net games all of your character files were on your system, which meant that you could fairly easily edit them. Blizz is making a new server setup for WoW. It won't be hosted on B.Net. WoW and all other mmogs keep most data on the server so trying to hack is much harder. You can still map or speed hack but editing your character would require you to hack into a game server.

Alpha is all over the internet...did anyone try it yet?

Azgorath:
Servers will do nothing to deter a dedicated hacker. If the hacker wants to do it, and thinks about the steps, he will accomplish it. The fact that its gonna be on servers isn't gonna make a difference to some hacker that has the skills and knows how to use them. Take my word for it, I have done small hacks on my school's website and then changed them. Nothing big, like changing a few words or something, but some hacker who knows what he is doing is gonna make some serious reckage on the game if he wants to.

All you can do in leaked alpha is sightseeing...but that's plenty, because beta starts soon anyway...

Downloading it right now. I should have it by Tuesday.
Yigg Yous: If that's the case, name one MMORPG that's been hacked and thus, had all it's data tampered with? Better yet, name one where a person was able to access their character data and change the stats around.

ok, I myself know how to tamper with character stuff, but i dont. And two, no one HAS done it yet, but people can, they just know that the consiquencies or risks are too high to bother with. Im not sure if u consider this hacking, but h2 just got its source code hacked/stolen.

I disagree. If people could hack their characters they would be doing it. Period.
As to the HL2 source stealing, thats a completely different type of hack. Somehow they monitored his email for quite some time, pretty scary stuff. But I think it just involved the client.

Come on, don't BS me. I'm well-versed in computers and I've known many people that are extremely adept with them, especially compared to me and I know the only way possible to manipulate data from a server is to either find an exploit or to have remote access to it.
Just like JonnyG said, if it were possible, people would be doing it. I know I would.

Aye, it was a vulnerability in the architecture of the client Valve was using that allowed them to exploit it.

hence why I wondered if you guys considered it to be a hack. Actually, for DAoC the character stuff is stored on your comp, its just really hard to understand and manipulate. And you are right, usually you do have to have acess to a server to do so. But I do know someone who did hack his chara in DAoC, and never was caught.

I have heard that the client will only let you mess with the character creation screen...to log on you need both a login and a password...now if you have those then you might be able to do something. If you hack into an alpha with a new character they might realize that you arent supposed to be there...

I have heard the same thing. Wonder how Blizzard is gonna deal with this.

In leaked alpha, you have your own realm and server. No need to connect to Blizzard... :) Also, there are no NPC's in hacked alpha, but it's still cool to run around...and swim underwater...
