Gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com) has released the first 8 of their Top 40 Games of 2004 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index.shtml) List.

40. Ultima X Oddyssey (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index40.shtml)
39. Spider Man 2 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index39.shtml)
38. Resident Evil: Outbreak (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index38.shtml)
37. Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index37.shtml)
36. City of Heroes (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index36.shtml)
35. Far Cry (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index35.shtml)
34. Siren (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index34.shtml)
33. Black & White II (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index33.shtml)

Two MMRPG's on the list. I'm surprised that they are this far back, hopefully Mythica is up higher on the list. It shows that 2004 looks to be a real good year for gaming.

Ok, sorry to be a stick in the mud, and no offense JG, but what the heck is the point of a list like this supposed to be anyway?

Does anyone really care? This seems to rank just behind lists of "Best games of all time"...

JonnyG

Ouch, the point is...hmm good point. :) Actually the point is marketing and getting people to know Mythica. If it shows up on a top 40 list of games for the next year, it's good exposure. Maybe some new fans will check it out and get hooked like us.

Fair enough...

No MEO yet, no D&D, No Lineage II...

JonnyG

I'd be very surprised if DnD or MEO makes the list, just don't see them above WoW or EQ2. Lineage 2 might. I'm really hoping that Mythica does. But with only 16 slots left and competing with consoles too, I doubt we'll see more than 8 more PC games and one of them has to be HL2.

Not to mention Kohan 2, Pirates!, Thief III etc.

Gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com) has released the first 8 of their Top 40 Games of 2004 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index.shtml) List.

Here's the next update for those of you on the edges of your seats.

16. Unreal Tournament 2004 (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index16.shtml)
15. Thief III (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index15.shtml)
14. The Sims 2 (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index14.shtml)
13. The Movies (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index13.shtml)
12. True fantasy Live Online (XBOX) (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index12.shtml)
11. Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index11.shtml)
10. Resident Evil 4 (GCN) (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index10.shtml)
09. Fable (XBOX) (http://gamespy.com/preview2004/index9.shtml)

Well, lots of PC games on that list, eh Jonny?

JonnyG

Interesting 3 PC, 3 console, and 2 both. So split right down the middle as I suspected.

One more MMRPG on the list, although its XBox. I think TFLO is going to be awesome, and Fable should be a great game too. The X Box sure has a ton of good stuff coming out.

Mythica is either top 8 or not on the list, very interesting. A full to Odin, "Odin we beseech you, let Mythica rock into the top 8, preferably top 3."

The more I think about it, the more scared I become. It looks like Mythica didn't make the top 40 list at all. Too many console games on the list.

Argh, why do you think it wouldn't?

I think its because they're so stingy on releasing info. If they were releasing more info, others would be as hooked as we are.

i sure agree LOL! more info please!!!!

nah, i think its just becaues of
1) console games being on the list
2) games like EQ and others having a strong background as opposed to a newer game like Mythica

I wouldn't give up hope yet.

I'd expect at least one RPG to be in the top 8. The big three have already been ranked. The resources available to MSGS, the richness of Norse mythology, Mythica's immortality angle, and the centrality of Private Realms to the game system may be enough to gain that spot.

Gamespy had the first Mythica preview (before E3) which asked "Epic in scale and grand in design, will this be the next great MMORPG?"

They've also had some love from the Devs with Matt Staroscik writing an article for the site.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

My best guess is that Mythica is not in the Top 8.

It has a few strikes against it...

1. Mostly a console list and several big name console games will take the top few spots. (Cannot imagine that Halo 2 is not #1)

2. MMORPGS's already mentioned are bigger more established names

3. Doubt on if Mythica will even be released in 2004.

Would love to see a top 8 spot for this game as I think it probably deserves it, but dont hold your breath.

i think release for Mythica is said to be Oct. 2004. Thats what CGW said in their updated version.

That means nov.

Sure enough Mythica's been robbed. Robbed I say!!! Not even in the top 40, argh.Gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com) has released the top 8 of their Top 40 Games of 2004 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index.shtml) List.

8. Battlefield Vietnam (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index8.shtml)
7. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index7.shtml)
6. Onimusha 3 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index6.shtml)
5. Ninja Gaiden (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index5.shtml)
4. Full Gran Turismo 4 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index4.shtml)
3. Halo 2 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index3.shtml)
2. DOOM 3 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index2.shtml)
1. Half-Life 2 (http://www.gamespy.com/preview2004/index1.shtml)

I can't complain with the top 5. But Onimush 3, whats up with that? I wouldn't have put Vietnam up there either, but I'm not a huge FPS fan. I wouldn't expect Mythica to make the top 8, but not the top 40, they've been robbed.

Now its up to the developers to prove that these schmoes have no clue.

GT4? Oh, the humanity. A third sequel racing game that will barely be an improvement over the last one will be the fourth best game of the year. Yeah, right, and maybe monkies will fly out of my butt.

Yeah, Mythica did get robbed.

JonnyG

The industry is showing a determined lack of innovation. Not one game on that top 8 list is a new game, everyone of them is a sequel. Thats bad!!! Even if all the games are going to be good.

I would say that Ninja Gaiden is mostly a new game. The gameplay is pretty different than its spiritual 2d side-scrolling successors.

BigJonno

I agree with Scarne on that one.
