Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com) has released their review (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/cityofheroes/review.html) of City of Heroes. The best thing about City of Heroes is that it genuinely offers the thrill of discovery--something that is fundamentally uncommon in gaming, since most games are closely modeled on established genres. Actually, much of this thrill may be derived from the game's elaborate, extremely entertaining character-creation process, which allows you to craft a convincing replica of any of the most famous (and not-so-famous) superheroes in the Marvel and DC canon. As well, there's a good chance you can rip off the look of your favorite video game character or Hollywood action hero. However, you can always come up with something completely off-the-wall and original, if you'd prefer.

I hear Gamespot tried to review a paper bag recently but couldn't determine what score to give it.

(cross posted from the Vanguard Forums ... yep we were wandering off topic :) )
I was chatting to BJ the other night when he mentioned that he was playing CoH. Knowing that - despite his pleas of innocence - that he really is a roleplaying nazi, I asked why. His reply was something along the lines of "Because it's a blast".
And so I went and forked out $US 54 and tried it. And you know what? He's right. CoH has that special something, a feeling of excitement, a rush, a simplicity, and a goofiness that prevents too much self-importance. It's the most simple minded fun I've had in ages.
I'm not sure if it has the gameplay depth and metagame to keep me playing in the longterm - GW looks like a more likely winner there - but at the moment I'm having a hoot.

are you playing on Justice because, if so, you must join our Massive HQ supergroup!

CoH has tremendous roleplay opps if you avail yourself of them. Admittedly, I haven't done it enough myself, but you can make custom binds for all your powers so that anything you do has a tagline attached to it. Cheesy, heck yes, but totally in keeping with the genre. You can even create a set of rotating files like I have for JAG so the character says more than one thing for a certain action. Stuff like that may seem silly, but it helps to establish a mood. It's fun to sit around and just talk in character, something I'd never do in a fantasy/sci-fi game...the genre lends itself to it wiith its over the top nature.
Moreover, the game is so conducive to creating unique characters with their own backstories. You aren't forced to, but it is fun and other people can see wjat your character is all about.

Wouldn't be surprised. I remember that most of their scores are about 2 points lower than what it should be, so most games receiving a 6.9 are really a 8.9 game. I always keep that in mind hehe.

I like the Gamespot reviews. I feel that by keeping the scores lower they can show a truly awesome game some love.
